A refrigerator that stops cooling in Dallas is more than an inconvenience — it is a race against the clock. With ambient garage temperatures regularly exceeding 100 °F from June through September, perishable food can reach the danger zone within two to three hours. After six years of service calls across 25 DFW cities, we have diagnosed thousands of warm fridges. The causes fall into seven clear categories, and roughly a third of them can be resolved without a technician ever setting foot in your kitchen.

Why Dallas heat accelerates refrigerator failures

Refrigerators are designed to maintain a 37–40 °F cabinet when the surrounding air is about 70–80 °F. In a Dallas garage or a poorly insulated utility room, that surrounding air can hit 110 °F. The compressor runs longer, condenser coils struggle to reject heat, and thermal components wear out faster. We see a 40 percent spike in cooling-failure calls between June and September compared with the rest of the year.

Cause 1 — Dirty condenser coils

Condenser coils dissipate heat from the refrigerant. When they are coated with dust, pet hair, or construction debris — all common in fast-growing DFW suburbs like Frisco, Celina, and Prosper — heat transfer drops and the cabinet warms up. This is the single most common reason for a fridge that feels warm but is not truly broken.

Safe DIY check: Unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall or remove the kick plate, and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Plug back in and allow four hours for the cabinet to recover. Total cost: $0.

Cause 2 — Evaporator fan motor failure

The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator compartment. When the motor fails, the freezer stays cold but the fridge side warms up. You may notice the fan is silent when you open the freezer door and press the door switch.

Typical DFW repair cost: $220–$310 including parts and labor. Repair time is 45–75 minutes. We carry evaporator fan motors for Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, and KitchenAid on every truck.

Cause 3 — Defrost system failure

Auto-defrost refrigerators rely on a defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost timer or control board to melt frost from the evaporator coils periodically. When any of these parts fails, frost builds up until the coils are a solid block of ice and airflow stops completely. You may hear the compressor running but feel little or no cold air inside.

Typical DFW repair cost: $220–$340. Our technician will determine which defrost component has failed and replace it in a single visit.

Cause 4 — Start relay or overload failure

The compressor start relay provides the electrical kick the compressor needs to turn on. A failed relay produces a clicking sound every few minutes while the compressor stays off. The fridge warms up over 12–24 hours.

Typical DFW repair cost: $185–$260. The part itself is $40–$80, and we stock relays for all major brands.

Cause 5 — Refrigerant leak

A sealed-system leak means the refrigerant that carries heat away from the cabinet is escaping. You might notice an oily residue near coils or hear a faint hissing. This is the most expensive repair on the list and typically only worth doing on appliances under eight years old or premium built-in units.

Typical DFW repair cost: $490–$890 depending on where the leak is and how much refrigerant needs to be recharged.

Cause 6 — Worn door gasket

A torn or warped door gasket lets warm air seep in continuously. The compressor runs nonstop trying to compensate, but the cabinet never reaches target temperature. Test by closing the door on a dollar bill — if the bill slides out easily, the gasket needs replacing.

Typical DFW repair cost: $145–$220. Gaskets are appliance- and model-specific, so have your model number ready.

Cause 7 — Compressor failure

If the compressor itself has failed, you will hear either silence (no humming at all) or a constant buzzing without the usual start-up click. Compressor replacement is expensive but still cheaper than a new refrigerator if the unit is under 10 years old.

Typical DFW repair cost: $490–$720. Check your manufacturer warranty first — LG covers linear compressors for 10 years, and Sub-Zero covers sealed systems for 12 years.

How video diagnosis saves you a service call

About 40 percent of our cooling-failure calls are resolved during a $30 video diagnosis. A technician watches you check coils, listen for fan operation, test door gaskets, and inspect frost patterns — all from a 15-minute video call. If the fix is a coil cleaning or a defrost reset, you are done for $30. If an in-home visit is needed, the $30 is credited toward the $90 service fee.

Have your refrigerator model number ready before the call. It is on a sticker inside the fridge compartment, usually upper-left or upper-right wall. With the model number we can pre-load the right parts on the truck.

Frequently asked questions

How long can food stay safe in a warm refrigerator?

The USDA recommends discarding perishable food that has been above 40 °F for more than four hours. In a Dallas summer, an unpowered fridge in a garage can cross that threshold in two to three hours. Keep the door closed to buy time and move critical items to a cooler with ice.

Can I fix a refrigerator that is not cooling myself?

You can safely clean condenser coils, test door gaskets, and verify temperature settings. Anything involving electrical components, refrigerant, or removing interior panels should be left to a licensed technician to avoid injury or further damage.

Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that is not cooling?

If the appliance is under eight years old and the repair estimate is less than 50 percent of replacement cost, repair is almost always the smarter financial decision. For premium brands like Sub-Zero, repair makes sense up to 20 years.
